Summary

Unit 5 deals with high performance polyethelyne fibres (HPPE), also known as high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) fibres and extended chain polyethylene (ECPE) fibres). They are also known by other names, related to brands, such as Dyneema and Spectra amongst others. They are used mainly for ballistic protection, vehicle armor, cut resistant gloves, twines, nets, ropes, mooring ropes, boat sails, the reinforcement of laminates, etc. The gel-spinning process uses physical processes to make available the high potential mechanical properties of the molecule. This unit studies their production, characteristics, structure, properties and applications.
